One of the highlights of our work was documenting the construction of the massive bespoke stage for the concert celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Turning the iconic Horse Guards Parade into a live concert venue was no small feat, and being there to capture it all was a real treat.
Our client, Star Live, had the huge task of building the stage over several days for a BBC broadcast, with an invited audience that included the King and Queen. Our brief was to photograph and film every stage of the build — from the main stage to the King’s viewing platforms and retiring rooms. With security incredibly tight, correct accreditation and ID were essential, and following the site’s health and safety protocols (and not drawing the attention of heavily armed officers) was a top priority.
Over three scorching days in central London, we captured dramatic stills and video for a short 30-second case study. Drone operations weren’t possible due to nearby high-profile buildings, so for the hero shot of the finished stage, we strapped in on a cherry picker — a surreal and thrilling experience. Huge thanks to the operator for handling it so precisely. Being handed the key to the King’s retiring rooms was another moment I won’t forget — access like that feels quite surreal.
Documenting this build was more than just work; it was a privilege to capture a historic and proud moment for the client. Moments like this are what make our job so rewarding.
